What is Kinesiology?
The application of the sciences of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and neuroscience to enhance, restore or optimize human movement and function in an evidence-informed practice environment.
Who are Kinesiologists?
Kinesiologists utilize evidence-based scientific research to enhance physical and mental well being for those who have been injured, suffer from lifestyle based diseases, age related changes/decline and other physiological conditions, with the goal of optimizing human function in work, home, sport and leisure environments.
Statistics Canada defines Kinesiologists and related professions under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2011 defines kinesiologists and related professions (Category 3144).
A kinesiologist can work closely with you to:
- prevent and treat illness or injury through appropriate exercise testing, assessment, and prescription;
- improve physical performance in sport, work, and activities of daily living;
- oversee or assist with the management of a recovery care plan;
- assess workplace demands and provide workplace design services (ergonomics) to help prevent and/or recovery from injury; and
- support mental health and wellness through active living and lifestyle coaching.
Kinesiologists are recognized by the BC Ministry of health as allied health professionals and serve as part of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in public and private healthcare facilities and may also work independently in the community to support your needs.
Kinesiologists provide quality service when and where it is needed and can assist with the transition from clinic/facility based treatment to independent, home or community self-care environments, as part of pre and post healthcare discharge teams.
