What is Kinesiology?
Kinesiology is the application of scientific disciplines—including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and neuroscience - to enhance, restore, or optimize human movement and function within an evidence-informed practice environment.
Who are Kinesiologists?

Kinesiologists are human movement specialists who use evidence-based research to improve clients’ physical and mental well-being.
They work with individuals affected by:
- Injuries
- Chronic diseases
- Age-related changes and decline
- Other physiological conditions
Their goal is to optimize human function across work, home, sport, and leisure environments.
Note: According to Statistics Canada, kinesiologists are classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2011 – Code 31204, within Category 3144, which includes professional occupations in therapy, assessment, and related fields.
What Can a Kinesiologist Do for You?
A kinesiologist can work closely with you to:
- Prevent and treat illness or injury through exercise testing, assessment, prescription and therapy
- Improve physical performance in sport, work, and activities of daily living
- Assist in managing recovery and rehabilitation care plans
- Assess workplace demands and provide workplace design (ergonomic) solutions to prevent or recover from injury

Kinesiologists in the Healthcare System
Recognized by the BC Ministry of Health as allied health professionals, kinesiologists:
- Work as part of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in both public and private settings
- Operate independently in communities to support individual health needs
- Provide care when and where it’s needed, including transitions from clinical settings to home or community-based self-care environments
Kinesiologists play a vital role in pre- and post-discharge healthcare planning, ensuring continuity of care and promoting long-term wellness.
