CRC Clearance Letter process - Effective Aug 19, 2024

Upon receipt of your email request (to the office@bcak.bc.ca), BCAK will request the CRRP send you a secure link. Ensure that you have the access code indicated above (in point 2) ready to input into the online application form when requested.

The online criminal record check form uses your BC Services Card Login to verify an applicant’s identity. The BC Services Card Login is a secure and easy way to prove who you are when accessing government services online.

Learn how to set up the BC Services Card Login.

If you live in another Canadian province or territory and do not have a BC Services Card application on your phone, or a physical BC Services Card, you can still set up the BC Services Card Login and submit an online criminal record check. You will need two pieces of government-issued ID to verify your identity when you apply.

If you live outside of Canada, or choose not to use the BC Services Card Login, you can still submit a criminal record check online:

  • BCAK will be notified once you submit your CRC application and will verify your ID via email. An authorized person will confirm your ID and the criminal record check will be automatically submitted for processing.

How To Share an Existing Clearance Letter

If you've had a criminal record check through the CRRP previously, you might be able to share the clearance letter instead of requesting a new check and letter.

It is up to the previous organization for which you completed the clearance letter as to whether they are willing to share the clearance letter. If they decline, you will need to request a new criminal record check clearance letter

You may share a clearance letter if:

  • It was completed through the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP)
  • It was completed within the last 5 years
  • It's still active
  • It's the same "works with" type - BCAK requires clearance for both "children and vulnerable adults.

You can't share a clearance letter if it was completed through a local police department, the RCMP or a third-party company that performs criminal record checks.

If you have an eligible clearance, you can consent to share it when you apply for a criminal record check.

After your Criminal Record Check

BCAK will be notified whether you are cleared to work and/or volunteer with vulnerable adults and children, however they will not notify you directly.

The CRRP program stipulates that you must advise the BCAK if you have any new charges or convictions and if you do not there may be penalties imposed upon you by the BC Ministry of Public Safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all BCAK members require a Criminal Record Check (CRC) clearance letter?

Practicing and Non-Practicing members are required to have a current Criminal Record Check (CRC) clearance letter on file with the BCAK. Academic members do not require a CRC clearance letter but do sign a declaration of membership.

A CRC clearance letter must be presented to the BCAK prior to being permitted to become or renew Practicing or Non-practicing membership, and obtain a new letter every five years thereafter. The CRC assesses a person's presence (absence) of criminal convictions and the risks and potential impact related to working with vulnerable adults and children. Under the Province of BC's Criminal Records Review Act, all healthcare practitioners are required to maintain a valid CRC clearance letter to work with the public, including those members of the public who are considered vulnerable to abuse under the Act.

Where/How do I complete a CRC that meets BCAK requirements?

The CRC must be completed through the BC Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General's Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP) website. If you do not qualify for the Electronic Identity Verification (EIV) process, you will be required to submit a manual request form.

How much does it cost?

The cost is typically $28.00 and applicants/members are responsible for payment of the required fee(s) to complete the 'Name based criminal record check' process.

Occasionally (on rare occasions) individuals will be required to complete a 'Certified criminal record check', necessitating a fingerprint review. There is an additional fee of between $50 and $100 depending on the police station where the the finger prints are recorded. This fee is also the responsibility of the applicant/member. If this type of check is required, you will receive notification from the Ministry by letter mail explaining the process. For additional information on when/why the Certified criminal records check may be required, please refer to this RCMP information page for details.

When should I complete my CRC application?

CRC clearance letters should be applied for 30 to 45 days prior to being required or your current one expires.

Are there organizations offering CRCs the BCAK cannot accept?

Yes, because the BCAK is recognized as an oversight body for kinesiologists in BC, a CRC must be completed through the Provincial Government. The BCAK is not permitted to accept criminal record checks completed through other entities or agencies, as they lack the review and reporting requirements required under the Criminal Records Review Act. This is a list of some of the CRC providers which the BCAK cannot accept.

  • Local police or RCMP detachment (direct request)
  • Mybackcheck.com
  • MyCRC
  • Commissionaires
What if I have a current (valid) CRC clearance letter through the CRRP completed for another Employer or Business?

If you have completed a CRC through the CRRP, covering both vulnerable adults and children within the past 5 years, you can request the results be shared with the BCAK. Complete this request to share when you apply for a criminal record check (i.e. if you have an eligible clearance, there will be an option for you to share it). There should be no cost to you for this service.
