The BCAK strives to ensure its members have access to a broad range of employment opportunities in both clinical and non-clinical work environments. For this reason, BCAK requires applicants to have completed a 4-year clinical kinesiology (or equivalent) degree stream that prepares graduates for a career in professional kinesiology practice.
Kinesiologists in BC are recognized by the BC Ministry of Health as Allied Health Professionals, and by other stakeholders, such as ICBC and select third-party health benefits providers/insurers. To maintain this level of recognition and access to treatment funding, BCAK kinesiologists entering practice must demonstrate entry level competencies necessary for clinical practice, including the knowledge and competency to perform in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary healthcare settings.
The BCAK standards serve to deliver a high level of competency in practice, while enhancing 'Practicing or Non-Practicing member Kinesiologists members, ability to earn a viable living as a professional kinesiologist. The characteristics of members include a strong understanding of evidence-based practice, professional accountability, ethics, and the laws related to the provision of healthcare services to the people of BC.
