Professional Membership – Work Integrated Learning (WIL) & Professional Work Experience (PWE)


Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Requirements

Eligibility:

Applicants who graduated within the last 5 years must complete a minimum of 100 cumulative hours of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) or clinical work experience.

Clinical WIL Hours

  • Must be completed in a professional, client-based kinesiology setting
  • A minimum of 50 of the 100 hours must be in a clinical (healthcare) practice setting
  • Supervision must be provided by:
    • A BCAK Practicing Member with 2+ years of experience, or
    • A regulated healthcare professional, such as:
      • Physical Therapist
      • Occupational Therapist
      • Doctor of Chiropractic
      • Respiratory Therapist
      • Registered Nurse
      • Nurse Practitioner
      • Medical Doctor
  • Research experience may be considered at the discretion of BCAK

Examples of Clinical WIL Settings:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (Neurology)
  • Chronic Pain Management
  • Ergonomics / Biomechanics
  • Occupational Health / Disability Management
  • Special Populations Rehabilitation (e.g., Cardiac Rehab, COPD, Diabetes Care)

Non-Clinical WIL Hours

  • Applicants may complete all 100 hours in a clinical setting or allocate up to 50 hours to non-clinical settings
  • Supervision may be provided by the list of supervisors above (under Clinical Hours) or :
    • Certified Athletic Therapist (CATA-CAT)
    • Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP / ACSM-CEP)
    • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA-CSCS)

Note:

  1. Volunteer experience may be accepted if it meets BCAK’s WIL standards.
  2. Activities such as sport coaching (game play/strategy), clerical work, administration, reception, marketing, or social media management do not qualify toward WIL hours.


Professional Work Experience (PWE) Requirements

Eligibility

Applicants who graduated more than 5 years ago must demonstrate relevant Professional Work Experience (PWE).

Experience

  • Must align with BCAK’s defined scope of kinesiology practice
  • Must demonstrate competencies and abilities relevant to professional kinesiology roles
  • Must involve working as a Kinesiologist with a variety of populations

Required Hours

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Option 1:
    • 1,500 hours of kinesiology-related work experience in the past 2 years
    • Includes 300 hours in Canada within the past 2 years, completed under the supervision of a BCAK Practicing or Non-Practicing Member with 2+ years of full-time experience
  • Option 2:
    • 5,000 hours of kinesiology-related work experience in the past 5 years
    • Includes 300 hours in Canada within the past 2 years, under the supervision of a BCAK Practicing or Non-Practicing Member with 2+ years of full-time experience

Documentation Requirements

  • Submit a notarized BCAK Professional Work Experience Record
  • All experience must be verifiable through one or more of the following:
    • Employment records
    • Service logs
    • Payroll documentation
    • Letters of reference (for volunteer work only)
    • Tax records (for independent contractors)

Note:

Volunteer work may count for up to 300 hours (but not more) of the total work experience requirement.
